DUKE
Gus stepped in front of me, thinking I was going to jump T. I wouldnât if he stopped talking shit about Kaitlyn, but I looked around Gus and glared anyway.
T held his hands up in front of him. âWhoa. You like her. I mean, really like her.â
âIâve never heard you say that before,â Gus added, his voice quiet, perhaps because he was within punching distance and didnât want to rile me. Weâd beaten each other up before, more times than any of us could count. We were too big, too strong now, and weâd all end up with concussions, broken noses or worse. And we werenât dumb enough to fight it out right before my mother showed up. âWhereâs Jed in all this?â
âHe was right there with me. As for today? Sleeping, like usual. Dad was right,â I said on a sigh. âI saw her and I thought she was The One. It was like Iâd been hit by a fucking two-by-four. Jed, too.â
They smiled at me. Grinned like idiots, actually. âThatâs great,â Gus said, slapping me on the shoulder.
âNot great,â I countered, dropping back in my chair. âSheâs Kaitlyn Leary. Her father almost killed Mom and Dad.â
âUm, duh?â T countered.
Gus sat on the coffee table, remaining between the two of us.
âDoesnât that bother you?â I was surprised I had to ask.
âJesus, Duke, you know I hate that man.â T stood, went into the kitchen and grabbed a soda. Or three, as I saw he had one for each of us when he came back.
âMe, too,â Gus murmured, taking two of them and handing one to me. He twisted off the top of his and took a swig. âBut you donât have the hots for that asshole.â
âWait a second,â T said, holding up his hand. âYou said you didnât know who she was when you met her last night. But you do now. Meaning you saw her again. Youâre leaving stuff out.â
Gus nodded in agreement.
âFine. Itâs like this.â I told them about following her to her carâleaving out the finer details of what we did with her in Jedâs officeâand how sheâd freaked out and bolted.
âAt the time, she didnât know who you were either,â Gus said, taking another slug of soda.
âAre you kidding? She thought I was part of the male revue,â I replied, smiling as I remembered how surprised Iâd been.
They stared at me for a second, then started laughing.
âShe thought you were a stripper? Classic,â T commented, grinning. âYeah, she had no fucking idea who you were.â
âWhat? I could pull it off,â I countered, only slightly offended.
That only made them laugh louder.
I rolled my eyes. âAnyway, when I told her my name, it was like I told her I had leprosy or something,â I replied, moving away from the idea of me as a stripper. âShe bolted faster than a fucking rabbit.â
âSo you were all clueless. Just⦠into each other. She had the hots for youâa guy whose name she didnât even knowâif you had a little high school make-out session.
